Ripping off the Bandaid ( +2 NEW COVERS!)
I’ve been putting off this post for a while. I’m not usually a procrastinator, so this is unusual for me. But this has been hard to write. I’ve debated all sorts of cheery, “good news-bad news” ways to say this, and decided they were all a little silly. Because the truth is that I’m disappointed, and it would be lying to pretend I’m not.
So here goes…ripping off the bandaid.
The Watchers won’t be coming out in August. It’s been delayed. The new publication date is April 3, 2012. For those of you who were looking forward to it, all I can say is that I’m just as sad as you are. Maybe more so. Probably more so.
Why the long delay? Isn’t the book already written? Didn’t you show us the bright and shiny ARCs months ago? Yes. And yes. The book is written. ARCs were printed.
Here’s what happened: after coming up with the cover for The Watchers, and after printing all those ARCs, my publisher got feedback from some booksellers that the cover and title of Delcroix Academy: The Candidates weren’t doing what the cover/title were supposed to do: draw in readers and explain what the book is about. Though I loved the flames and the girl’s picture, I have to admit that I can understand why some folks didn’t like it. Because really, if you’ve read the book you know it’s not a story about flames and hellfire. It’s about a girl. A young girl. A girl who really doesn’t intend to blow up the world.

And although Delcroix Academy is the name of the school, it’s a hard name to pronounce. And the title “The Candidates” doesn’t tell you that this is a story about kids with superpowers.
So my publisher decided to come up with a new marketing strategy. One that, they hoped, would do a better job of communicating: 1) this is a story about a young girl; 2) this is a book about kids with superpowers.
And here we get to the good news part of the story. Delcroix Academy: The Candidates will be launched in paperback in March, 2012, with a new title and a new cover.
The new title, The Talents, will hopefully do some work for us, and the new cover will hopefully convey a few things as well. Like the fact that the heroine is 14, adorable, is not Carrie, and is headed to boarding school.
Now, I did promise that I’d give you two new covers, right? And so far you’ve seen one, for the paperback release of Book 1. So…what about Book 2?
HERE IT IS:

Beautiful, right? Absolutely spot on model for Dancia, and perfectly conveys the mystery and intrigue of the book. I just love it. And a new title, to go along with the new cover! And now when I blow these covers up for my wall, it will look like I’ve published FOUR BOOKS, instead of two. LOL!
Now, despite the LOOOOOOOONG wait for Book 2, I will have lots of ARC giveaways in the months ahead. In fact, I have an ARC to give away RIGHT NOW. It’s got the old cover on it, which I am sure will make this worth MILLIONS someday.
Comment to win and spread the word — The Marked (AKA The Watchers) is coming April 3, 2012. But you can win it NOW. Contest ends Friday May 27.

please enter me I’d love to find out what happens next. I loved the first book title and cover
Urggghhh! I have been waiting for The watchers and now I have to wait more. OK, so rant over and on to the AMAZING new covers. I am a huge fan of the old ones, but hey, if it gets this great book more mileage i am all for it!
I like the new covers and the name change, but I was a fan of the old school Candidates cover too! And I guess I’ll have to take my patience potion for the next book! I’m excited to read it.
Aww, that’s sad that it was pushed back!
But thanks for giving someone a chance to read it early!!
Thanks for the giveaway!

[...] Scott has some news to share about her Delcroix Academy series. First she explained that there will be a short delay [...]
Love these covers, Inara. The new titles are better. However, I liked the old ones better. But then I’m kinda weird like that. They had a certain exciting mystery around them.
Can’t wait to read the sequel and I’m hope to win this ARC with the old cover too!
Yay!!!

I really liked the old cover and the name Delcroix. It was original. The new ca]overs are ok but I still preferred the other ones.now I have to wait longer for the book. Well I hope more people buy it then.
So excited to read The Watchers (the Marked) *pouts*. Almost cried when I read that I had to wait so much longer. Such a big disappointment to have to wait. I didn’t think the old covers were that bad. I found the Candidates cover to be intriguing. That’s why I picked it up to begin with. But if new covers are what bring more people to read your books, than I say go for it. I wish everyone would pick up your books and read them because you are an amazing writer and this story is not one for anyone to miss.
I liked the old cover better (thought I’d be honest) Not this this is bad! It isn’t, I just really preferred the old one more. I hope with this new marketing strategy you’ll get more book sales! That’s what we want, right? To get your hard work and awesomeness out there to the masses?
I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST WITH THE NEW COVERS! And I’m so sorry that your next book got delayed.
I’d love to win the ARC with the old (muchly cherished and loved) cover.

Also, I tweeted about your giveaway here – http://twitter.com/#!/xLeeDx/status/73546219187736576
Thanks Melissa! I really appreciate you stopping by!
Hey Jaime — I *know* — it is waaaaay too long of a wait.
Glad you like the new covers, tho! I am especially attached to the cover for the Marked. And I love the model they used to Dancia. She’s perfect!
Kristin — I second that sentiment — URRRGGGG! But the Marked is coming. I promise.
Pinky swear.
Racquel — if you have some patience potion lying around, will you send some my way? I am in DESPERATE need.
(and thanks! I loved the old covers too, but I think these are great!)
Nicci, I’m so glad to share the news because I really appreciate the sympathy — and I can’t wait to get the book in SOMEONE’s hands!
Memrie, thanks so much for the comment and the tweet!! I am terribly addicted to Twitter, so I love it when someone shares my addiction.
I liked the old covers. They were beautiful and intrigued me, though I guess if these will attract others to buy the cook, then that’s okay. The new second cover really is beautiful. I think that “The Talents” could be a little more descriptive, because they’re about SO much more than a talent. The title underestimates your writing abilities, and the beauty you’ve put within the book. Either way, though, the new covers are flattering.
I’m sorry your book date got pushed back. I write sometimes, and I always feel anxious when it takes to long to find out how much people enjoyed my writing. I wish you the best of luck from all my heart.

Hey Mel! It’s been a while — hope your writing is going well, and I really appreciate your thoughts. I wish I was good at marketing, but all I really know how to do is write. So I’m glad my publisher cares enough to try to figure out what will work best and connect with readers.
Hi Jessica! I love that you thought the old name and cover were original — I liked them too. But don’t worry — the name of the school is still Delcroix, and now that we’ve done this whole title change, I think I’ll find myself using the name of the school a lot, because it will make sense to readers no matter what title they associate with the book.
Tricia, I adore you. <3 <3 <3
Lisa!!! Thanks for tweeting for me and finding me here on the blog. I am still waiting for my movies to arrive from Netflix. Promise I will let you know as soon as I watch Jhoom Barabar Jhoom! Whee!
And yes, we want people to READ and LOVE and BUY the book.
Inara! I love the new covers! I loved your old covers, too, but this really does feel more representative of the story inside, so I hope it helps Delcroix find its audience. Because these books rock.
Inara, too bad, but we’ll gladly wait:) I like the new covers and the titles are great and intriguing.
Love the new titles/covers but I also liked the old ones. I think these are better though and the model for dancia is awesome. Can’t wait for the next boook!
I just wanted to let you know, I love getting your twitter updates all through the day…they make me laugh and remind me just why I love writing as well. Thank you for keeping me in stitches and for the giveaway!
The first book rocked and I know the next ones will too… because the author totally rocks!
So if they have to change up the cover a bit I’ll be patient, especially if it means more people read your book and fall in love with them like the rest of us.
I liked the old covers, but hopefully these new will bring in more readers! I like them a lot, too. I love The Candidates and will just have to wait a bit longer for the next. Oh well. And of course I’ll have to buy another copy of the first one, now that it’s coming out with a new title and a new cover! Yes, smart marketing, indeed. Congrats and good luck.
Thank you Susan! I hope the younger set will see the covers and know this book is for them too, not just the older YA crowd. *fingers crossed*
Hi Dani! I love anyone who will wait for the next book — I know it’s a horribly long time!
Hey Samantha, thanks so much! I adore the model they got for Dancia — she’s fantastic, and I heard from my editor that she was also a big reader! Yay!
Caeti, what a thoughtful and sweet note. I really appreciate it — what’s your twitter handle? I will make sure to say hello!
Aw, Tina, that’s so sweet! You are my NC fan base!
BTW, I will send you bookplates — thanks so much for spreading the Delcroix/Talents/Candidats love.
Susan G-H (hey, no wonder you won — never realized your initials were GH before!) — thank you so much and wow, I never realized the potential to make everyone buy the book AGAIN. Whee!
Emily, I missed your comment yesterday, but oh my, I am so touched! I know what you’re saying, it’s so hard to put enough meaning into a one word title. My original title for book 1 was “Taking Sides.” Doesn’t convey the paranormal aspect of the book, but I think communicates some of the other themes that Dancia struggles with.
Good luck with your writing — I found one great way to get my writing in front of people and get feedback was to enter writing contests. It’s not free, but it is a guaranteed way to get readers. And it feels great when you final/win!
I love the new covers! I loved the first book and I can’t wait to read second.
Thanks for the giveaway!
Looking forward to the second book coming out! Thanks for the update on what was going on.
I know that The Marked will be entirely worth the wait! Looking forward to reading it and catching back up with Dancia and her friends.
xoxo

Hey Inara – I enjoyed the first book and I’m looking forward to the second one, even if I have to wait a little longer now just due to marketing strategies.
Personally I like the mystery of the original cover and title, but I can see the need for the change to try and draw more people to the books. Best of luck! We still miss you here at AW. I do envy your life w/o billable hours, but I’m sure writing has its own pressures.
Thank you, Inara. I hope that you continue your writing. It truly is a gracious thing to see others get the chance to express their ideas in my opinions. Thank you for replying to my message. I know you must have more important things to do than just respond to comments all day. I hope that your writing brings you as much joy as mine does.
- Emily
I posted them on my blog. I really like the colours on both. Looking forward to them
Thanks for this giveaway. Even though I liked the other title as well, the new one’s are really great. I also love the covers.
I can’t wait for both books to come out.
Oh, gorgeous! Love the glowy feel on both. And the fonts, too! *squeezes*
Hi Minas (or is that Mina S? I should remember by now, right?) anyway — name confusion aside — thanks for commenting and I absolutely love hearing that you enjoyed the book! MWAH!
Hey Tonya — I was kinda too sad about the date being pushed back to talk about it right away. But I’m better now.
Because the goregous new covers are totally worth the wait.
VV — you are the sweetest EVER! Thanks for commenting and being my Twitter-buddy. Big kisses to you!
Brenda – WOW — talk about voice from the past! I hope you are doing really well and enjoying the attorney life. I miss it sometimes, I seriously do. Even though all my lawyer friends want me to run and never come back (I don’t take that personally!) there’s a lot to be said for a job with a regular paycheck.
Next time I’m in Seattle we should get coffee. Would be great to see you.
Emily — talking to writers and people who enjoyed my book are THE MOST important thing I can possibly do. Except write more books. That’s a close second.
Petra, I really appreciate you posting the covers on your blog! Thanks so much!!! When we get a little closer to pub date, maybe I can do a giveaway on your site?
Thanks Katie!!! I really hope you enjoy them! And thanks for the cover and title love.
JUST PICKED THE WINNER — wish I could give one to everybody who commented!!!
BUT the winner is…
TRICIA!!

http://mindseeksanotherworld.blogspot.com/2011/06/talents-aka-delcroix-academy-candidates.html Late review for The Talents and some of my favorite questions from the study guide.
Ohhh my gosh. The Candidates is my ALLTIME favorite book. I have in my possession well over 100 books, and even more on my Nook, and I can’t find another book who even comes close to this one! (I even have book numbered from my favorite to my least favorite on my Nook, and your’s is number one (: ) I have been searching for the release date of what I thought was going to be The Watchers, and I finally found it. But then I found a link to come here, and I found out the new release date, and my heart broke. I have been waiting for this book forever!! I, personally, thought the cover and title of The Watchers was amazing. It’s going to be a long ten months.
[...] from The Watchers to The Marked! So now that all the confusing is out of the way I point you to Inara’s blog where you can see the new covers. Which are TDF, I mean it TDF [...]
